Cornwall
King Arthur Kelliwic Kit Hill Bodmin Moor
Callington is a small
ancient market town situated in south-east Cornwall.
The
town
lies in the Lynher Valley on the south-west side of
Kit Hill. The
Lynher Valley reaches across to
Bodmin Moor to the west.
On the
eastern side of Kit Hill is the Tamar Valley. Please go to Kit
Hill for some of the best panoramic views in Britain.
According to Arthur's Britain,
by Leslie Alcock, Callington is a possible site, amongst several
others in Cornwall, for being King Arthur's castle or court. Go to Kelliwic for
more information. Kit Hill would make a perfect location.
Callington has many murals about the town,
some with Arthurian themes. The mural in Well Street, Callington
depicts King Arthur returning to Cornwall with his warriors and greeted
by courtly ladies in attendance.
There are also several murals with a
Celtic and mystical theme. In Biscombes Lane,
Callington, there is a large mural called the Celtic Knot.
Some of the murals are about the
history of the town, the industries of mining, and the countryside
around.
You can take the Mural Trail, while
enjoying a your stay in the town.
Views from Kit Hill are spectacular in
all directions.
Old mine works at Gunnislake, just three
miles south of Callington.
Less than a mile to the north of Callington
lies Kelly Bray, which is now an area right on the side of Kit Hill.
Apart from the fact that it is named 'Kelly' the area fits the story for
other reasons. Kit Hill fits the descriptions of the site for King Arthur's
stronghold.
Kit Hill stands over 300 feet above sea-level.
From its summit, you can see as far as
Dartmoor to the east and Bodmin Moor
to the west. The mouth of the River Tamar and Plymouth can be seen to
the south, and one can see miles to the north. It is a perfect location
for protecting a king and defending his
kingdom from any advancing army
into Cornwall and southern Britain.
